Surgery for cancer

Despite of great achievements in pharmaceutical methods for coping cancer, the surgery is still playing fundamental role in treatment algorithms of the cancer patients.

The number of tumors which are potentially can be cured only with medications is limited. Chemotherapy and radiation can achieve complete regression of only small foci, and with large tumors, their size can only be shrinked. The large tumors cannot be completely removed from the body with medications alone. That is why the surgery is remaining the exact method allowing to eliminate the focus of disease. After the surgical removal of the tumor, treatment can either be completed, or the surgical treatment effect can be strengthened with appropriate chemotherapy.

As a rule, these are older people, which means they have more pronounced accompanying pathology of the cardiovascular, endocrine, respiratory and nervous systems, with weight loss and are physically weakened, including after chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Besides this, cancer surgery require a larger volume than in conventional surgery, because cancerous tumors not only disrupt the functioning of the organ in which they developed, but also affect the function of adjacent organs, and this must be taken into account when managing tumors.

Only experienced sursical oncologists perform the surgeries. If the conditions of the disease and the patient's state allow, we perform organ-preserving or reconstructive operations.

The surgical oncologist always discusses with patients the scope of the intervention, as well as the treatment plan. If necessary, a consultation is held with specialty doctors who prepare the patient for the surgery and participate in his recovery in the intensive care unit.
